Aside from the long established reputation for clinical excellence, LEC has also had a long continuing practice of community service and charity work. Over the years, numerous public awareness and free screening programs as well free eye surgery had been carried out for many patients. These community activities have now evolved into the Blindness Prevention Programme whose primary objectives are:-
- To increase awareness of the main causes of avoidable blindness as well as the preventive measures and treatment options for these diseases.
- To increase accessibility to eye care services, particularly for the needy
This programme is structured to be all inclusive in order to accommodate the different age groups as well as social and occupational conditions within our community. This is illustrated in the variety of activities which have been conducted in schools (early intervention), in different rural areas (increase awareness and accessibility) as well as industrial factories (occupational eye health and safety).
